The Eighth Dimming

Tam's class takes the horn, Oren presiding as the Elder and Maelis teaching. Tam's whale answers late; she counts four, and nobody believes a child's ear. On the Crown a noon pour comes out grey, and the Assayer writes it into the forge ledger. The Chorus votes to bring the herd deeper into Crown sky; Oren wanted one whale sent outward to find where the light now ends, and loses. On the Floor, Nyx tells the Lamplighter the count of fallen gods has passed the Seventh's, and he sends her up. A fourth whale lists, Maelis blows for it, and it does not answer.

The Oathmaster draws the red line across Halvane's eyes; his wing escorts a convoy and the toll is oil. Sera meets Oren at a port and wonders aloud how rain feels; he tells her the Fallers have stopped. Nyx reaches the Drift, awake for the first time in her life, and in a navigator's tent she kills Oren's oldest friend and takes his route-chart. Oren finds the body and the chart gone.

Cassian shows Sera a full vault, and she is reassured. A Measurer tells her why the finest thing ever made in this world is a sword. The Chorus darkens one port for one night in mourning. Halvane's wing strips a sinking god inside the storm. The Lamplighter trades oil with a hooded stranger for one word: the name of a range. The Assayer's ledger is stolen.

The stolen ledger comes down the cable and Nyx sells it to the Flotilla. Sera finds the Assayer dead and the master lens cracked: the Crown has been over-driving its lenses to hide that the forge fails. Tam calls, and a whale answers at once. Oren finds a Vantheon blade in an assassin's hand.

The price of the Aerie's contract comes out: the Crown's lower terraces. Cassian and Oren meet and fail to bargain. The Flotilla cut the Crown's oil by a third. Nyx goes up the cable to watch the Crown. Sera and the Magister find the disc of the Hole measured smaller, four cycles running, and she tells the Regent. Through the Vantheon lens, the rim is closing. Only Sera says it.

The Regent seals the Vantheon lens. Cassian pays the Aerie to make a fall; Halvane refuses and is overruled. At the breeding-ground the young are already thin. Nyx, in borrowed white, befriends Sera, and they spar on a crystal terrace. An Aerie wing dives on a healthy whale.

A living god is killed for money, bled slowly so the Floor can catch it. As its town evacuates, fire meets the venting gas, the first fire on a god since the Fall, and Maelis dies keeping the god steady for the last gas-craft. Halvane wipes the red line from his eyes and turns his wing to catching the falling. Nyx tells Sera what her father did, then boards the dying god and rides it home. The Chorus puts out every mooring-lamp to the Crown.

The Crown's sky is full of whales and none at the moorings. Sera opens the vault and finds it grey, re-finished bright. Halvane brings his wing to the Flotilla and finds Sera at the empty port. On the Floor, Nyx is taken to a cavern of kept wrecks, and a wall that is not rock. The sky flickers, once, everywhere.

The light goes. Sera and Oren lay his Mural beside her tables and find the same four cycles in both; through her lens a thin line of fire still burns where the eye sees nothing. Sera meets Tam. A ship comes through the door and, for the first time in a hundred and fifty dimmings, comes down whole. Someone was already waiting where it landed.

The herd drops toward the wreck and the people of the dark are seen for the first time. Tam hears the whales answering later and later and sounds the retreat on Maelis's horn against Oren's order, and the whales obey her. Halvane's wing takes the stranger out of the storm. On Oren's whale he reads the Mural's first word aloud. On the Floor, Nyx is given one word: Vantheon. In the dark, an engine coughs.
